From teaching yoga to becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I have always been fascinated with the body’s ability to heal and perform at its best, and Massage Therapy is an integral part of this. Practicing massage is a vital part of my practice. I have been a practicing Licensed Massage Therapist since 2016. I have over 500 hours of training in massage therapy with my initial schooling done at Lauterstein and Conway in Austin TX. I have focused my continuing education on pain management techniques and can treat a variety of orthopedic injuries and chronic pain conditions.
How long have you been a licensed massage therapist?
I have been licensed since 2017
How many hours of training do you have?
I have hours 530 of training.
Why did you choose massage therapy as your career?
I have always been interested in Physiology in its Latin sense as “the knowledge of nature”. In 2012 I earned a bachelors degree in environmental science with a minor in human development. I enjoyed working in the fields of outdoor recreation and environmental education. In 2014 I completed 200 hours of training in Hatha yoga instruction. I taught yoga in Belton Texas where I also lived and worked at a horse training and boarding facility. Given the physical demands of my career choices, massage therapy was a natural progression. I also studied to meet physical therapy graduate program requirements prior to and during my massage training. I worked as a massage therapist upon licensure and then mentored under former Myo employee, Julia Traylor. I am currently enrolled in the 2019 doctorate degree program for physical therapy at the University of St. Augustine. I plan to continue the practice of massage therapy as a physical therapist because I find the science and art of massage therapy to be so beneficial.
Where did you go to school for massage?
I went to the Lauterstein-Conway Massage School.
How do you describe your massage/work to others?
My Deep Tissue style is a slow, myofascial, consistent pressure, that follows the entire muscle, with linear and cross fiber movement. My Swedish massage uses gentle techniques and a holistic approach to increase circulation, lymph drainage and relaxation. For the Myo therapeutic massage I use a combination of deep tissue, Swedish, pain management and Thai massage techniques. All of my massage, regardless of modality, implements techniques in a manner that meets my client’s unique postural and movement needs. Therefore, being able to make accurate postural assessments and listen to my clients is foundational to my practice.
What are some examples of Continuing Education you are interested in and why?
I have studied a lot of Tom Meyers, who learned under Ida Rolf. His work on myofascial meridians has been a big influence on my deep tissue and structural bodywork. In 2019 I am studying outcome based soft tissue interventions, cadaver based anatomy and an integrated system approach to human physiology. I am also excited about Myo’s LMT continuing education programs and movement classes.
What do you do to stay healthy?
I stay healthy by receiving massage, practicing yoga, calisthenics, and prioritizing mental health.
What do you like about working at Myo Massage?
There is so much I enjoy about working at Myo, the movement culture, the level of skill and expertise of my coworkers, the passionate and tireless owners and the helpful administrative professionals at the front desk. Myo offers a beautiful space where healing professionals can offer their knowledge and skills. It is an intelligent, kind and supportive work environment that offers great service.
